Adventure Awaits: Set sail on a catamaran and go snorkeling! Now, about my first snorkeling attempt... I jumped off that catamaran into 100 feet of water with total confidence. I'm a strong swimmer—what could go wrong? Well. It took approximately 2.2 seconds for me to look down, process that I was suspended above an ocean floor 100 feet below me, and promptly pop my head back up thinking "NOPE. Not today, ocean." I continued to swim normally sans-snorkel gear, pretending I didn't know about the vastness underneath me. Here's the thing: no matter how well you swim, that first glimpse to the ocean floor can feel like jumping out of a plane.
Fortunately, the Sheraton Maui Resort gave me a redemption a few days later. Not only is it the most perfect spot for relaxation (and yes, I know all of Hawaii is relaxing, but this exceeded even my high expectations), but you can rent snorkel gear and ease into the water at your own pace. Baby steps, people. I worked my way to about 20-25 feet depth and saw a sea turtle! The vibrantly striped fish in blues and yellows were absolutely stunning. I bought a locally made turtle and shell necklace to commemorate finally getting it right. Huge thanks to the Sheraton sales team for helping me turn a panic moment into an actual experience.
