First Influence, Forever Legend: Remembering DJ Dan

First Influence, Forever Legend: Remembering DJ Dan

Daniel Wherrett | Pioneer of the West Coast House Sound

Some losses hit different. Not just because of who the person was to the world, but because of who they were to your world. The sudden passing of DJ Dan - Daniel Wherrett - is one of those losses. All of us that have been in the electronic music industry for the last 10, 20, 30+ years have been sitting with it, not quite sure how to put into words what he meant to so many of us, including right here at OmniEra.

A Pioneer, Plain and Simple

If you didn't grow up in the West Coast underground dance music scene, imagine it's the early 1990s. Electronic music is raw, sweaty, alive, and absolutely electric. Somewhere in San Francisco a DJ named Dan is helping build something that would ripple outward for the next three decades.

DJ Dan co-founded the Funky Tekno Tribe in San Francisco, one of the most legendary collectives in West Coast dance music history. He pioneered what became known as the West Coast House Sound: a psychedelic, funky fusion of house, breakbeat, and techno that was entirely its own thing. He headlined the world's biggest festivals. He earned two Pete Tong Essential Mixes on BBC Radio 1. He remixed Depeche Mode, New Order, Janet Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest. DJ Mag named him the #1 House DJ in the world in 2006. Carl Cox called him out by name. DJ Sneak called him "a real teacher to all."

He was, as so many have said in the days since his passing, "a DJ's DJ." Someone whose influence crossed genres, coasts, and generations. Someone who made you feel something - whether you were a lifelong raver or hearing a house beat for the very first time.

What He Meant to OmniEra

OmniEra grew out of the arts and entertainment culture of San Francisco in the early 2000s. That world - those clubs, those events, that community - is our DNA.

Our partner and dear friend Carlos Lopez - known to many as Carlos Alfonzo, aka Suprimo - had DJ Dan listed first in his bio as one of his earliest inspirations and most important influences. Not just for a year or two. For over twenty years. Carlos grew up in San Jose, fell in love with house music in 1993, and named Dan as one of the Bay Area locals who lit that fire in him. Anyone who knew Carlos knows how seriously he took his craft and how carefully he chose the names he lifted up. DJ Dan was always at the top of that list.

What made Dan so extraordinary - and why he resonated beyond just the house music world - was his range. In the 90s, he also ventured into harder styles of electronic music, including collaborations with Southern California's Ron D Core. That willingness to push into heavier, more aggressive sonic territory set him apart from his peers and earned him respect far outside his home genre.

That's exactly where our other partner, Chris Madore - DJ Cloudskipper - enters the picture. Chris got his start in Southern California in the late 90s, coming up through the UK hardcore scene. It was a world shaped by those harder, driving sounds - the same territory Dan had explored in his So Cal collaborations. Chris always spoke about Dan in an elevated light, with genuine reverence for his talent regardless of genre or geography. When you understand where Chris came from musically (he played the trumpet in school too!), that respect makes all the sense in the world. Dan was one of the rare artists who could hold space in different worlds - the soulful, funky house sound of San Francisco and the harder-edged underground - and be celebrated in each of them.

That's what made him a DJ's DJ. That's why he meant something to all of us at OmniEra, even across our very different musical corners.

Donald Glaude & DJ Dan

I've been fortunate in this life to love music the way I do, and even more fortunate to be part of a community where that love has been shared so deeply.

I attended several of Dan's shows over the years, and he was always generous, warm, funny, and completely present. No ego. Just a man who loved music, people, and was genuinely grateful for every moment. He had this way of making everyone feel like an old friend, even when surrounded by a table full of people who loved him just as much.

He also shared the stage at various times with both Carlos Alfonzo and Cloudskipper in the 2000s and 2010s. Those crossover moments - where the underground worlds of our people collided and elevated each other - are sacred to me. They always will be.

Dan once wrote: "Enjoy every day to its fullest no matter what BS or Drama the world throws at ya… We only get one 'go' on this carnival ride… what's after… who knows?"

That is exactly the kind of man he was. Carlos Alfonzo lived his life the same way.

The Outpouring Says It All

Look at social media right now: if you're in this world, you already know. The tributes are pouring in from DJs, producers, fans, promoters, and music lovers spanning decades and continents. People who heard him as teenagers in the 90s. People who were on the dance floor with him just weeks ago. People in their 20s who discovered him through a mix or a remix and fell in love with a sound they didn't have words for yet.

That kind of reach doesn't happen by accident. It happens when someone gives their whole self to the music - and to the people who love it.

Dan said he felt his purpose in life was "to heal through music."

Mission accomplished, Dan. Mission more than accomplished.

The Beat Goes On

OmniEra was built on a foundation of culture, community, and connection in a time and place that likely wouldn't have unraveled in the same was if it wasn't for Dan. He was a bridge between scenes, between coasts, between generations. He was the kind of artist who made other artists better just by existing - and who made regular people feel something extraordinary just by pressing play. He was more than a pioneer, a legend, a famous DJ or producer - he was LOVED.

To Daniel Wherrett: thank you for the music. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for being the kind of person this world doesn't make enough of.

To Carlos and Chris up in that big DJ booth in the sky - I hope the three of you are making the most legendary set this universe has ever heard. I know if you two were here, you'd be sharing your own memories and deep appreciation for all that Dan was.

We love you, Dan. The dance floor will never be quite the same.
